Shanghai Youth Theatre
SYT is a platform to nurture the talent of Shanghai’s youth in all aspects of theatre - acting, singing and dance. The weekly course is taught by professional performers from the UK, US and Europe with a wealth of industry knowledge and experience behind them. Students will develop a range of skills and techniques through weekly training and termly performance opportunities where they can showcase their talents. This course provides a wonderful chance for students wishing to explore the world of musical theatre and for them to reach their potential in a fun, safe, creative and energetic environment.
SYT VOICE
The Voice & Singing section of the SYT programme concentrates on acting through song and developing confidence through the sung voice. Students will be introduced to the importance of breath control to allow them to develop strength in their voices to project with clarity of speech, while building vocal range to create an understanding of intonation and modulation to establish coloured sung and spoken vocal performances.
We incorporate a range of voice techniques to promote healthy voice use, important for young singers. Ensemble-led exercises concentrate on improving learning by ear and harmony work, while individual performances allow students to cover a range of musical theatre repertoire appropriate to their casting.
LAMDA EXAMINATIONS
SYT students will have the opportunity to enter for their LAMDA Examinations in Acting or Musical Theatre disciplines.
LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) is one of the UK’s most prestigious drama schools offering performance-based examinations and examinations.
LAMDA Examinations are recognised educational qualifications and are an accredited Awarding Body by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) in England. The higher level examinations award UCAS points (for university entry in the UK).
SYT DANCE
The Dance & Movement session is for all dance abilities. Focusing primarily on Jazz Dance, while also introducing students to other disciplines: contemporary, ballet, tap and commercial styles.
Students will learn the importance of developing character and storytelling through movement.
Each week students will learn new repertoire to enhance their technique and play with movement styles, to produce exciting, dynamic and engaging performances.
SYT PRODUCTIONS
Spotlight Productions is the performance platform for SYT students. Each term SYT students will have the opportunity to showcase their work, culminating in the annual flagship Spotlight Production.
Alongside the annual SYT Production season, Spotlight offers an exciting programme of professional shows for the whole family to enjoy. SYT ACT
Drawing on the teaching and practices of key theatre practitioners our Acting sessions will introduce students to core acting skills and techniques.
Improvisation allows students to play with physicality and voice to create character and also encourages them to lose inhibitions in a new group setting. We believe it's important for students to work on improvisational techniques to build confidence and creativity in their ideas. The key in improvisation is to accept and develop on others ideas and suggestions to establish a fun, creative narrative in the scene. It's lots of fun as the improvised dialogue can take us in lots of different directions. Students will also cover a range of classical and contemporary play texts and learn how to analyse and interpret texts to produce imaginative, original performances.
SYT WORKSHOPS
Throughout the academic year Spotlight offers a number workshops led by visiting professionals from leading vocational schools and universities in the UK. Alongside these workshops, we have performers from the cast of international touring West End productions on board to teach students repertoire and give them an insight into the world of the true professional.
